When you come to Hawaii, you will probably notice that the locals do not use the directions of East, West, North, and South. From the city of Honolulu, East is Diamond Head or Koko Head, West is Ewa ( pronounced eh-vah ), North is Mauka ( toward the Mountains ), South is Makai ( toward the ocean ).
The four sides of the island are . . . South Shore, North Shore, Leeward side (west) and Windward side (east).
Also, in Hawaiian names, all the vowels are pronounced, and the vowel sounds are as follows:
A is ah, E is ay (as in hay) I is eee, O is oh, U is oooh.Oahu is pronounced Oh-ah-hoooh. The island of Molokai, is pronounced Moh-loh-kah-eee.
Aloha (ah-loh-hah) means both hello and goodbye . . . .it is also used when expressing a feeling of goodwill as in the phrase: "The aloha spirit"
The following photos are of the island of Oahu &
Hawaii. Other islands will be added later.
